1) Maldives confers highest civilian honour on Narendra Modi

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Maldives’ highest civilian award, the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzudeen, by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on 8 June.

  • The award is in recognition of the many services Prime Minister Modi has offered to cement the longstanding and amicable ties between the two countries, and for the magnanimous assistance that the Indian government continues to provide to the Maldives under his stewardship.

2) G20 Finance Ministers call for creation of digital tax

  • Top G20 finance officials agreed on 08 June that there was an urgent need to find a global system to tax internet giants like Google and Facebook, but clashed on the best way to do it.

  • The G20 has tasked the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), to fix the system that has seen some internet heavyweights take advantage of low-tax jurisdictions in places like Ireland and pay next to nothing in other countries, where they make huge profits.

3) SBI to offer home loan linked to repo rate

  • The State Bank of India will introduce a product where the interest rate is linked to the repo rate of the Reserve Bank of India.

  • The Home Loan receivers will have the option to choose interest rate linked to RBI’s repo rate.

4) International Space Station to be open to tourists from next year

  • U.S. space agency NASA announced that it would open up the International Space Station to business ventures including space tourism — with stays priced at $35,000 a night — as it seeks to financially disengage from the orbiting research lab.

  • There will be up to two short private astronaut missions per year.

  • The missions will be for stays of up to 30 days.

5) Govt considers setting up national institute for valuers

  • The Centre is mulling a law that will soon regulate valuation professionals in the country and towards this an institute for valuers will be set up on the lines of bodies such as chartered accounts of India.

  • Valuation professionals play crucial role determining value of an asset, which assumes even more importance now with the introduction of insolvency and bankruptcy code in India.

6) Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel Takes Oath As New CJI Of Delhi High Court

  • Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on 7 June.

  • Earlier, Justice Patel was posted at the Jharkhand High Court.

  • The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name for the appointment as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

7) Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurates first-ever World Food Safety Day

  • Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare inaugurated the first-ever ‘World Food Safety Day’ on June 7, 2019 in New Delhi.

    • The theme for this day was ‘food safety everyone’s business.’ A day was celebrated by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

  • In India, the ‘Eat Right Movement’ is being conducted by FSSAI. In an effort to galvanize states to work towards ensuring safe food for citizens, FSSAI has developed the first State Food Safety Index (SFSI) to measure the performance of States on five parameters of food safety.

  • At the function, the Union Health Minister felicitated seven leading States/UTs based on the ranking for the year 2018-2019 for their impressive performance. These were Chandigarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

8) Indian Embassy in Saudi organises ‘Gandhi cycle rally for peace’

  • A first of its kind ‘Gandhi cycle rally for peace’ was organised by the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia on June 7 as part of the celebrations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

  • Over 150 participants from all walks of life, cultural and ethnic identities participated in the 6 km long route cycle rally organised in the Saudi capital Riyadh and remembered Mahatma Gandhi and relevance of his message of peace on the occasion.

  • India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr Ausaf Sayeed, flagged off the event. It was organised in association with the Diplomatic Quarter Authority and Saudi Cycling Federation.
